Driving a No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota that was
the clear class of the field, Busch won for the fourth time this season, the
fifth time at Richmond and the series-best 67th time in his career.
It was the second time Busch has led every lap in a
Nationwide Series race, the first coming at Phoenix in 2011 when he led 200
laps after starting from the pole.
“It’s been a while, if you think about it,” said
Busch, who hadn’t won a Nationwide race at Richmond since 2011. “We’ve had a
lot of bad luck lately, and it feels good, trying to get some mojo back, get
ready for tomorrow night (Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race), see what
we can salvage there and roll on into the Chase.”
Busch said Joe Gibbs Racing did considerable work on
its short-track package after finishing third behind the Chevrolets of Harvick
and Elliott in April.
“All in all, the guys did a great job,” Busch said.
“They were really smart about what they needed, what we needed, what I needed.”
Kevin Harvick ran third after ceding the second
position to Elliott on the race’s final restart on Lap 233. Ryan Blaney came
home fourth, followed by Brian Scott and Regan Smith, who fell 19 points behind
Elliott, his JR Motorsports teammate in the series standings.
While Busch spent the race comfortably out front
after taking the green flag from the pole position, Harvick systematically
worked his way forward from the 15th starting position. Harvick passed Blaney
for the second spot just before the caution flag flew for the fifth time on Lap
166 because of debris on the backstretch.
But that was as close as Harvick could get. Busch
quickly pulled away to a lead of more than two seconds after the subsequent
restart on Lap 172 and continued to pull away. The margin stabilized at roughly
3.3 seconds as Busch and Harvick worked heavy traffic as the laps counted down.
Not to belabor the point,
but this has been a phenomenal season for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his team. At both the Sprint Cup
and Nationwide level, the sport's most popular driver has enjoyed success.
Heading into Richmond, the team
has eight wins between four drivers, with four of those coming from
championship contenders. Despite the on-again-off-again success of the Sprint
Cup drivers at the lower level, Elliott has been the brightest star for the team.
But
even with a top-five finish in Atlanta, Elliott came away frustrated after a
late mistake on pit road. Elliott spoke about the disappointing end to his day,

Harvick began to eat into Busch’s advantage before a
yellow flag interrupted his progress.
NASCAR called the sixth caution on Lap 226 after
Landon Cassill’s Chevrolet brushed the wall in Turn 2, but the restart on Lap
33 produced more of the same for Busch, who blocked Elliott to the inside and
took off.
“Kyle had a much better car and was able to take off
on the short runs and get way out there,” said Harvick, who thought he might
have been able to catch Busch during the final run, if not for the caution.
This will be an interesting race for sure,” Johnson said.
“There are a few guys trying to get in the Chase and a few guys trying to stay
in it.”
After a victory last week in
Atlanta, Kasey Kahne won’t need a win to get in the Chase. He seemed relieved
heading into the final regular race.
“It’s been a tough season, and we
have had kind of a downer year at times,” Kahne said. “Then we started running
really well, so I’m very happy to be in the Chase with my teammates. Glad we
are in the Chase. We can race our teammates now.”
Denny
Hamlin has a Chase spot, but stressed the needs of contenders at RIR.
“We’ll be pulling out all the
stops to try to win the race and get three more points heading into the Chase,”
Hamlin said. “The competition is so tough and every point will matter once the
Chase begins.”
Carl Edwards seemed relaxed and
ready to prepare for the Chase.
“It's the last race before the
Chase,” Edwards said. “So it'll be an opportunity for us to go out and
have some fun and work on fine-tuning our team for the final 10 races.”
Kurt Busch shared some confidence
as a Chase contender.
“We’re
going to give it all we’ve got and go for the win,” Busch said.
“But it’s not the end of the world if we don’t, and we can almost use this race
as a breather to be better prepared for ChicagolandSpeedway
next week.”
Brad Keselowski defined the upcoming task at the fast
track.
“I
enjoy racing at Richmond as it has great short-track racing,”Keselowski said. “This is one of those places
that the driver has to be up on the wheel and also take care of the car. It is
also a place where pit-lane performance is crucial since the laps are so fast.”
Joey Logano won at Richmond earlier this year and
would be happy to repeat that achievement.

still can’t believe that I won at Richmond,” Logano said. “I know what I want and what I

the Chase without a win. He defied the odds of the win-and-you’re-in notion.
“I love racing there,” Kenseth
said. “I actually think all the drivers do. With Richmond being a
three-quarter-mile track, where you have a little bit of speed, yet the track
is really worn out and slick from new tires and old tires that it makes for a good
race.”
Greg Biffle is on a big bubble
with his point total and has to run up front or get a win to avoid being
knocked out of contention.
“Richmond almost drives like a
speedway or intermediate mile-and-a-half track,” Biffle said. “The way the
front stretch sweeps—you get a lot of speed. Racing is so good because you
can run two or three wide up the race track [and] get a run off the bottom.”
When the checkered flag falls at
Richmond, the 26-race 2014 regular season ends and the new 10-race elimination
playoff Chase gauntlet begins. Racing events will reveal if the format
generates greater excitement, but expectations are elevated.
For
drivers and teams without wins, and for the few drivers on the cusp of
elimination, the next 400 laps at RIR are like an entire season wrapped up
in 300 miles.
